Intercom costs less than Zendesk on seats at every team size in the seat cost run: $5,700 a year for 25 agents on Intercom Essential against $16,500 on Zendesk Suite Team, both on annual billing. Zendesk counts more native channels, 9 of 12 against 7. On AI, Intercom’s Fin charges $0.99 per outcome and Zendesk $1.50 per automated resolution on committed volume, but a Fin outcome also covers handoffs and routing, so the two units are not the same thing.
Zendesk vs Intercom is a choice between seat price and channel breadth, with a question about AI units on top. Every figure below is a list price as of 8 October 2026, taken from the three October runs.

Seat cost at 5, 25 and 100 agents
Zendesk’s messaging and live chat start at Suite Team, $55 an agent a month billed yearly ($69 monthly); Support Team at $19 is the email ticketing plan. Intercom includes live chat, support email and in-app chats on every plan, so Essential at $19 a seat billed annually ($29 monthly) is the cheapest plan with both.
| Team size | Zendesk Suite Team, annual billing | Zendesk, monthly billing | Intercom Essential, annual billing | Intercom, monthly billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 agents | $3,300 | $4,140 | $1,140 | $1,740 |
| 25 agents | $16,500 | $20,700 | $5,700 | $8,700 |
| 100 agents | $66,000 | $82,800 | $22,800 | $34,800 |
The next plans up are Zendesk Suite Professional at $115 an agent a month billed yearly ($149 monthly) and Intercom Advanced at $85 a seat ($99), then Expert at $132 ($139). Advanced includes 20 free Lite seats and Expert 50. The October seat cost run lists each plan with its source.
AI price and unit
Zendesk charges $1.50 per automated resolution on committed volume, which needs 100 or more resolutions bought ahead, and $2.00 pay-as-you-go, on any Support or Suite plan. An automated resolution is a request the AI agent resolves without escalation to a human agent, counted per conversation. Suite Team includes 5 a month per agent, capped at 10,000 a year. Zendesk states 80+ languages for its AI agents.
Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome, at most one per conversation. A billable outcome is a resolution (no further help requested after Fin’s last answer), a procedure handoff, a disqualification or a self-serve routing; a sales qualification is $9.99. Nothing is charged if Fin cannot answer or the customer asks for a human. Fin also runs on another helpdesk without Intercom seats, with a minimum of 50 outcomes a month, and Fin Voice is $1.99 per voice outcome through sales. Intercom states 30 languages for Fin Voice and no count for text Fin.
| Billable conversations a month | Zendesk, committed rate | Intercom Fin |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | $750 | $495 |
| 2,000 | $3,000 | $1,980 |
| 10,000 | $15,000 | $9,900 |
These are upper bounds at one billable unit per conversation, seats excluded. Zendesk’s figure is before its included 5 or 10 resolutions per agent a month; Intercom’s excludes add-ons and the 50-outcome minimum. Because a Fin outcome includes handoffs and routing, the same month of traffic can produce more billable Fin outcomes than Zendesk automated resolutions. The resolution rate guide sets out how each vendor defines the unit, and the October AI price run prints them beside each price.
Channels each supports natively
| Channel | Zendesk | Intercom |
|---|---|---|
| Native | Native | |
| Live chat | Native (Suite plans) | Native |
| Voice | Native (Suite plans) | Add-on, usage-based |
| SMS | Add-on | Add-on, charged per message |
| Add-on | Add-on, charged per conversation | |
| Facebook Messenger | Native | Native |
| Native | Native | |
| X | Native | No credit |
| In-app SDK | Native | Native (web, iOS and Android) |
| Help center | Native | Native |
| Community forum | Native | No credit |
| Slack or Teams | Add-on | Native (shared Slack channels) |
“No credit” means the channel is not stated as part of an Intercom plan, so the coverage run counts nothing for it.
Where they differ
- Seat price for email plus chat. $19 a seat a month on Intercom Essential against $55 on Zendesk Suite Team, both billed annually.
- What a billable AI unit is. Zendesk bills a request resolved without escalation. Intercom bills an outcome, which also includes procedure handoffs, disqualifications and self-serve routing.
- AI without the helpdesk. Fin can run on another helpdesk with no Intercom seats. Zendesk’s AI agents need a Support or Suite plan.
- Voice, X and a community forum. Native on Zendesk. Voice is a usage-based add-on at Intercom, and X and a forum earn no credit.
- Slack. Native at Intercom through shared Slack channels. An add-on on Zendesk, marked “Additional fees apply”.
- Stated AI languages. Zendesk states 80+ for its AI agents. Intercom states 30 for Fin Voice.
SMS and WhatsApp are add-ons on both, and both count a native help center, in-app SDK, Facebook Messenger and Instagram.
Who should pick which
Pick Intercom for the lower seat bill: Essential costs less than Zendesk Suite Team at 5, 25 and 100 agents on both billing terms. It also fits teams that work with customers in shared Slack channels, or that want Fin on top of a helpdesk they already run.
Pick Zendesk if voice, X and a community forum must be native, if AI should be billed only for requests resolved without a handoff, or if the 80+ stated AI languages matter.
The Intercom competitors ranking and the Zendesk competitors ranking set each against ten ranked alternatives, and the AI customer service software list ranks Fin against other AI agents.
